About the Course

Renewable Energy: Photovoltaics and Geothermal Energy

Gain a good understanding of key issues in the design of photovoltaic and geothermal energy systems.

You'll learn about the fundamental technologies behind the design of:

  • photovoltaic systems
    • including semi-conductor physics, cells and modules
  • the different types of ground source heat systems and scoping for geothermal energy systems

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering or the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, you'll have:

  • comprehensive knowledge of the technologies associated with the key elements of photovoltaics and geothermal energy
  • the ability to critically evaluate the different technologies and understand the situations in which each may be applied
  • critical awareness of the current problems faced by the photovoltaics and geothermal industries and understand how current research may benefit the future of the industries

You'll be able to:

  • demonstrate your understanding of the technologies associated with photovoltaics and geothermal energy appropriate to the design of energy systems exploiting these resources
  • collate, analyse and evaluate data associated with photovoltaics and geothermal energy, deal with complex issues and make sound judgements in the absence of complete data
  • communicate your conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences

Course Outline

  • Technology associated with photovoltaic systems
    • enabling technology of semi-conductors: theory, device operation, processing and fabrication techniques
    • cells: design, manufacture and performance
    • modules: design, manufacture and performance
  • Technology associated with geothermal energy systems
    • deep geothermal energy: theory, site selection, power plant type
    • ground source heat: pumps, drilling, design, site selection, licensing

Prerequisites

Prerequisite knowledge

To attend the course, you should have a reasonable level of knowledge of the following topics:

  • Awareness of technical design and regulatory frameworks, including Health and Safety, as applied to Engineering and Physical or Environmental Sciences or Technology

This course is also delivered as a Module (code SPG8002) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment.
