In response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Newcastle University is not delivering any face-to-face CPD programmes before January 2021. If you are interested in studying any of our modules online, contact the CPD Unit for advice.

About the Course

Design of Transport Infrastructure

A comprehensive explanation of UK highway design and its origins in safety research.

We start the course with a general introduction to Highway Geometric Design, covering:

  • the derivation of the current UK road design standard TD9: Highway Link Design
  • the role of safety in highway design
  • the application of geometric design standards
  • the calculation of horizontal and vertical alignment
  • an introduction to basic highway modelling on computers

The remainder of the course will provide you with an understanding of:

  • research into design and operating speeds and geometric consistency
  • the principles of junction design
  • junction capacity assessment and design
  • road pavements, materials, traffic loading, design and maintenance requirements

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.
