Get a Head Start to HE

Do you want a head start with preparing for university? Visit our campus in September to help you prepare for the transition to University.

Head Start to HE is our on campus event for Year 13 and final year college students that are looking to give themselves a head start before going to university. The programme has been developed with local school teachers/students and is designed to provide information to help you:

  • make final course choices
  • support the application process (including interview preparation);
  • discover how to make the successful transition from school and beyond
  • find out about our national PARTNERS Programme

Timetable & Sessions

Head Start to HE is designed to be as flexible as possible to fit around your studies and interests. The workshops will take place between 15:00 and 18:00 on Wednesday 18 September 2019. You can choose up to 3 workshops to attend – but if you just want to come to 1, that’s OK too! Optional campus tours will also be available at 13:30 and 17:00.

All of the workshops are currently available to choose in each timeslot, so if you are only able to attend one or two of the timeslots, you still have the full choice of workshops*.

Workshops Available

Your Application to Uni Information about the process of applying to university, where to research different institutions and courses. Also looks at what happens on results day and the clearing process.
Student Finance Explained Information about Student Finance including how to apply, when to apply and also bursaries and scholarships available. 
Making Your Choices Which university is right for you? How are you going to pick your firm and insurance choices? This presentation looks at the different factors to take into consideration when making your decision on Higher Education. 
On Course to Uni: thinking beyond school Exploring how university differs from school, and the range of skills needed to excel during your time at university. 
Interview Preparation for Medicine & Dentistry This session will give you all the information you need to know about the Medicine and Dentistry application process, including the UKCAT test, and help you prepare for an interview at Newcastle.
What's in a Name? Looking beyond the subjects you studied at school to the more unusual opportunities that are available at University, along with the careers that they can lead to.
