Gursharan: Psychology - Graduated 2019

What were the benefits of the PARTNERS Programme for you?

For me, the PARTNERS programme helped ease my nerves before coming to university in September. I met people on the summer school, who became my best friends at university and who still remain my friends now!

Not to mention, the summer school taught me relevant academic skills that I didn't learn at college: such as referencing, and how to use the online learning platform. This made it so much easier when I started university and writing assignments. I definitely think the programme helped me settle into university so much faster.

What support did you receive from the PARTNERS Team during the Summer School and throughout your time at University?

The PARTNERS team were incredibly approachable and friendly, they supported me by answering any questions I had about coming to Newcastle University or the Programme. The team helped me so much academically too, as I got great feedback on my work before I actually headed off to University.

How did the PARTNERS Programme prepare you for employment?

Having done the PARTNERS summer school, I became a student ambassador when I joined the university in September. This helped prepare me for employment by increasing my confidence and communication skills, which meant I had all the CV experience I needed to apply to graduate roles.

Now, I work full-time for the University and this wouldn't have happened without the support from the PARTNERS team.

Did the PARTNERS Programme influence your career choices?

Yes, the programme reassured me that Psychology was the career choice I wanted to do. After speaking to academics on the summer school I was even more interested in my subject choice and went to university to study it. This has shown me that I still wish to pursue a career in Psychology in the future.

If you could give advice or tips to a new PARTNERS student, what would it be?

I would tell them to make the most of the time you have with academics and in your learning time. You get to speak to your potential lecturers, and even still, university lecturers. So, ask them anything you want to know and for advice!

JOIN IN! PARTNERS is so much fun, and you will meet so many great, like-minded people. Enjoy the social aspect of the programme, as it reflects real university life.

Finally, don't be scared to ask for help or advice. The PARTNERS team are so kind and approachable and will be able to help you with anything.
