Marine Engineering Masterclass

This class will take place on the main campus of Newcastle University. Pupils will spend the day in the University’s Marine Engineering Department. The main focus of the day will be ship design. The aim of the day is give the pupils some insight into some of the problems associated with ship building.

Pupils will firstly be introduced to the problems associated with ship building:

  • Stability
  • Buoyancy
  • Ship shape

In groups pupils will be given materials to design and model their own ship, which will be tested in the University’s towing when completed. 

Throughout the day pupils will also visit the:

  • Hydrodynamic Laboratory
  • Towing Tank
  • The Emerson Cavitation Tunnel
  • Design Suite
