What's It Like To Study Chemistry at Newcastle? (WiLtSCaN) Days

Annual events - available on advertised days across the second-half of school's summer term - post AS examinations

A full day visit to the School of Chemistry for year 12 AS Chemistry students who are going to study A2 Chemistry to show them what a typical day as a Chemistry undergraduate at Newcastle University might be like.

Format of the day:

  • Pre 10.00 Meet in the Faraday Room, 1st floor, Bedson Building
  • 10.05 - 11.00 A-level Spectroscopy Lecture (review of m.s. & i.r. & introduction to n.m.r.)
  • 11.00 - 11.30 Spectroscopy problem-solving workshop (identity of simple molecules using m.s., i.r., 1-H and 13-C n.m.r.)
  • 11.30 - 12.00 Talk by our Undergraduate Admissions Tutor
  • 12.00 - 1.00 Lunch break 1.00 Reassemble in Faraday Room
  • 1.05 - 4.00 Laboratory Session - a typical stage 1 undergraduate chemistry practical (Outreach Lab or Teaching Lab depending on numbers)
  • By 4.00 Depart
