Confucius Institute 2019 Annual Board meeting

On 27 April, 2019, the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University welcomed a Xiamen University delegation and held its annual CI Board Meeting at the historical Blackfriars Restaurant.

On 27 April, 2019, the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University welcomed a Xiamen University delegation and held its annual CI Board Meeting at the historical Blackfriars Restaurant. Guests attending the meeting included six CI board members as listed below: Professor Pro-Vice Chancellor Richard Davies Globalization, Jonathan Galloway, Associate Dean (Int’l & Strategic Projects), HASS Faculty Office, Andrea Wilczynski, Head of SML, Professor Vice President Bin Yang of Xiamen University, Mr. Tongwen Mao, Director of Southern Base of the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Office of Confucius Institute Affairs of Xiamen University and Dr. Pan Wei, Xiamen University-dispatched Chinese Director of the CI at Newcastle.

Professor Davies chaired the meeting and gave welcome remarks. After greeting guests from Xiamen University, he reviewed the achievements that had been made since the last board meeting held in Chengdu. He then announced that Newcastle University would be working with China Scholarship Council, funding ten Chinese students to pursue their PhD studies at Newcastle University each year. In responding to Prof. Davies’s welcome remark, Prof. Yang complimented on the brilliant work done by the CI in the past few years. He also expressed the wish that two universities could work together on future exchange programs amongst staff and faculties.

As a major item of the agenda, Director Pan Wei reviewed last year’s CI projects and presented the updated CI profile to the Board, pointing out that this year the CI would continue to focus on the teaching of Chinese language and the promoting of Chinese culture in local schools and within communities. Board members were impressed by CI’s upcoming events and projects.

To conclude the meeting, members from two universities exchanged gifts and souvenirs as an indication of friendship and good wishes.
