The Confucius Institute supported a local theatre production

On 29 March, Palace Garden in Newcastle, hosted the sold-out play From Shore to Shore scripted by Mary Cooper with MW Sun.

A Chinese restaurant might seem a bizarre venue to stage a play. However, on 29 March, Palace Garden hosted the sold-out play From Shore to Shore scripted by Mary Cooper with MW Sun. In fact, the choice of location couldn’t have been for suitable for the spectacle about to unfold: From Shore to Shore presented three true-life based stories about the Chinese immigrant community in Northeast England. Besides, a two-course meal featuring some of the finest delicacies of Chinese cuisine was also included as a part of the theatrical experience.

Director David KS Tse and the cast certainly did not allow the unconventional setting to limit their creativity and imagination. Although most performers had to play multiple roles, their portrayal of characters was strikingly precise and at times delivered strong emotional blows.

As a major facilitator of many cultural events in the region, the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University also showed support for this local production. Director Professor Qian Jun, Chinese Director Dr Pan Wei and two volunteer teachers attended the event while Professor Qian gave a welcoming speech before the performance.
