On 21 March at King’s Hall, Armstrong Building, Newcastle University, a very special lunchtime concert was held in collaboration with the Confucius Institute, bringing traditional Chinese instrumental music to the UK audience. The one-hour concert was divided into two major parts. The first part featured classic Chinese music pieces. It started with Professor Jie Xu’s erhu solo which he finished excellently. After that, Mrs Yan-Hua Lu, the pipa expert, performed another solo with perfection. Two musicians then together presented a fantastic duet. The theme of the second part was “east meets west” in which Professor Xu and Mrs Lu performed along with a pianist and a harpist. The highlight of the concert was undoubtedly the final piece, Endless Love quartet, the theme song from the film The Myths starring Jackie Chen. Four instruments worked harmoniously, delivering a beautiful melody filled with emotions. The concert was highly applauded by the audience.
