Teams and players
- The game is played between two teams.
- Each team will have a maximum of 10 players. Seven are permitted on the pitch at any one time.
- There are six outfield players and one goal-keeper.
- The remaining three players are substitutes.
- Every team must play with a goalkeeper.
- Each team must have three male and three female players on the outfield at any one time.
- The goalkeeper can be either male or female.
The game
- Two halves of 25 minutes each, with an interval (half-time) of not more than five minutes
- Following half-time, the two teams change ends
- Full hockey rules apply for Intramural hockey, except changes in scoring of goals.
Starting and restarting the game
- The game is started with a hit or push from the centre of the centre line. It follows the umpire’s whistle as play commences at the start of each half. After a goal has been scored, the ball may be raised immediately using a push, flick or scoop but must not be raised intentionally using a hit.
- Each team must be positioned in their own half of the pitch and the opposing players must be a minimum of 5 metres from the ball until the centre pass is played.
- The ball can be played forwards, backwards or sideways and must move a minimum of 1 metre before being played by a player of the same team
- The taker can use a self-pass (ie pass the ball to themselves). The pass must involve two very distinct actions ie the taker must first tap it forwards, sideways or backwards and then play it a second time either to pass it or to dribble it.
Scoring a goal
- A goal is scored when the ball has been struck by an attacking player in the shooting circle. It must cross completely over the goal-line between the goal-posts and under the cross-bar and hit the backboard for the goal to be allowed.
- If the ball is deflected by any player on the pitch and goes in the goal it will stand no matter where in the goal the ball goes.
Scoring system
- Three points will be awarded for a win and one point for a draw.
- If a team fails to turn up, the match is awarded as a 5-0 walkover to the opposing team. The team failing to show up will also have 1 point deducted from their league table points.
- If a team fails to turn up to play on three occasions, they will be immediately withdrawn from the league, with no refund given.
Captains
- The Captains toss a coin for choice of ends or possession of the ball at the start of the game
- Each Captain is responsible for the conduct of all players in their team, including those on the bench - the substitutes.
Umpire
- The University Hockey Club will provide umpires for all Intramural fixtures. A £6 umpire’s fee is required from both teams prior to the start of the game. If the umpire does not turn up, the match must go ahead with a nominated umpire, as agreed by the two captains.
- The umpire has the authority to sin bin players (up to 5 minutes) for misconduct or continuous infringement of the rules if necessary. Any player sent off during the game will automatically serve a 2 match ban.
- Any team failing to show up for a fixture is responsible for paying the full umpire’s fee - £12.
Substitutions
- Substitutions are made on the centre line, and are allowed at any time, except following the award of a penalty corner or penalty stroke, when only the defending goalkeeper may be substituted and only if injured.
Equipment and clothing
- It is strongly recommended that shin-protectors and mouth-guards are worn by all outfield players at all times.
- No player shall wear any equipment that may be dangerous to them self or other players. This includes raised jewellery, baseball caps with a stiffened peak and/or any sharp object
- The use of appropriate footwear for the playing surface (trainers or turf shoes)
Goalkeeper
In the interest of safety, goalkeepers must wear full goalkeeping equipment:
- full helmet with throat guard
- body protector (groin and chest areas)
- hand protectors
- leg protectors
- feet protectors (kickers)
- abdominal guard or box
Goalkeepers should also have a stick.
The umpires will not allow any team to play with a goalkeeper who is not properly protected
- Goalkeeping equipment, bibs, balls, and sticks are available from the Groundsman at Longbenton Sports Ground in exchange for a SmartCard. Return all equipment borrowed from the Groundsman after the game.
Cancelling/rescheduling a fixture
- Teams must inform the opposition team captain and the Participation and Events Manager (Denis Murphy) of their intention to cancel a fixture as soon as possible. Fixtures will only be cancelled and rescheduled if the opposition team captain agrees. If the opposition captain does not agree to cancel and reschedule a fixture, the fixture will have to be played as scheduled or conceded (walkover 5–0 victory to the non-cancelling team).
- If a cancelled game (agreed by both captains) cannot be rescheduled within the set time period (end of term), a 5-0 victory will be awarded to the team who did not cancel the original fixture.
Cancellation policy for bad weather
- Games will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions (ice, snow, torrential rain). The game will be concluded as a draw with equal points awarded to each team if the game cannot be rescheduled.
- When the weather is considered doubtful, team captains should contact the Groundsman at Longbenton Sports Ground to enquire about the pitch – Tel 0191 266 2175.
Health and safety
- A First Aid bag and telephone to contact the emergency services is located in the Groundsmans office at Longbenton.
- All injuries/accidents should be reported to the groundsman.
- If any of your players are taken to hospital as a result of an incident in an Intramural fixture, you must inform the Participation and Events Manager in person, via phone or e-mail before 09.00 on the day after the accident.
