Eligibility
EligibilityTo be eligible in the current application round:
- Your minimum candidature must end between 1st July 2021 and 30th September 2021
The end of your minimum candidature is one year before the “thesis deadline” as shown in ePortfolio. (If you are in any doubt about your minimum candidature end date and your eligibility for the scheme, please contact the Doctoral College and we will check this for you.)
The next submission deadline is the 1st April 2021.
- If you apply by 1st April 2021, we will provide you with a decision by 1st May 2021
If your minimum candidature ends after this time, you may be able to apply at a later date, approximately 5-6 months before your minimum candidature period ends. Students whose minimum candidature ends on or after 1st April 2022 will not be eligible for this scheme. A full list of future deadlines is available here.
Exclusions
ExclusionsFunding from this scholarship scheme is not available for those students whose original funding body already provides stipend support for longer than 3-years or has agreed to fund a specific extension to an original 3-year period because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Funding will not be provided unless the criteria as set out in the Criteria for Consideration of the Period of COVID-19 Impact Scholarship, type B-D are met
Application Process
Application ProcessApplication is via this Webform
You should complete all sections of the webform and upload a Supporting Statement, which contains space for you and your supervisor(s) to provide information in support of your application. To help you complete the Supporting Statement the Criteria for Consideration of the Period of COVID-19 Impact Scholarship shows a non-exhaustive list of examples of reasons why you might require a scholarship together with representative periods of funding that might be granted.
The application review panel might also consider relevant details in your most recent Annual Progress Review or Additional Support Review; for this reason, the date of this review is requested.
Applications submitted via the webform will be passed to the Doctoral College for the assessment and award process. To ensure fair allocation of funding through the scholarship scheme, the Doctoral College is using cross-university academic panels to scrutinise each eligible application in line with the Criteria for Consideration of the Period of COVID-19 Impact Scholarship, in order to determine whether a scholarship should be awarded and if so, the appropriate scholarship length. Therefore, for successful applicants the scholarship awarded may differ to the scholarship length requested.
If you are not eligible for this scheme you may be eligible to apply for a ‘Fee Free Extension to your Minimum candidature’ or a ‘Fee Free Extension to your Thesis Submission Deadline’ if your progress has been disrupted due to Covid-19. Further information is available Financial Support for PGR StudentsFinancial Support for PGR Students.
Also, you may be able to access the Student Financial Support Fund. This fund is available to PGR students but is only intended to assist students in cases of unexpected or immediate financial difficulty. Awards are therefore designed to alleviate immediate difficulty while students are encouraged to pursue alternative funding sources. Further information is available here.
