Extension

Extensions to Thesis Submission Deadline

If you are approaching your latest submission deadline and you find that you require more time to complete and submit your thesis, in exceptional circumstances, the Dean of Postgraduate Studies may agree to grant an extension of time for submission.

If you are unsure of your latest submission deadline, you can find details in ePortofolio.  Alternatively, you can contact the Research Student Support Team (RSST) or the Medical Sciences Graduate School (MSGS) who will be able to confirm your submission date.

Conditions

  • Your request to extend your submission deadline must be submitted before you reach your latest submission date;
  • You proposed new deadline must be not more than 12 months in the future, (6 months for students in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering);
  • You must provide a detailed explanation of the reasons behind your request stating how your work has been or will be affected;
  • You must provide evidence to support the claims made in your application (e.g. medical evidence or a letter from your employer);
  • You must provide a clear workplan to show how you intend to achieve the new submission deadline that you have requested;
  • Your supervisors must support your application, have confirmed that your progress and attendance is satisfactory and have agreed that you should be allowed to continue.
  • Your application must have been approved by the Head of School/Institute (or nominee).

Further information for all students

  • If an extension is granted, and you are registered as an ‘extended submission’ candidate you will be required to pay the extended submission fee as set out in the University’s fee schedule. The fee for 2018-19 is £2,750 (pro rata);
  • Extensions of more than 12 months (6 months for students in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering) will not be considered;
  • Access to IT facilities and the Library will continue as normal during the extension period.

Additional information for international students holding visas

If you are currently in the UK as the holder of a visa (in any category) please be aware that it may not be possible for the University to support an extension to your visa as a result of the extension to your thesis submission deadline.

Additional information for students who receive studentships or external funding

If you are in receipt of a studentship from a UK Research Council, such as the ESRC or AHRC, you must ensure that your extension complies with the terms and conditions of your studentship. Before submitting your application, please inform the RSST or MSGS Graduate School Administrator of your intentions and they will advise you.

Apply for an extension to your thesis submission deadline
