LearningAgreement

Learning Agreement

One of the first activities a postgraduate research student will be asked to undertake following registration and induction onto their research degree is the completion of a Learning Agreement.   In signing this document a student provides confirmation that they have received, understood and accepted the expectations of their research programme.

Timeline

This document is usually discussed during a student’s first meeting with their supervisor.

  • Students who are registered on PhD, MD or MPhil programmes must complete and return the form within one month of registering on their programme;
  • Students who are registered on Integrated PhD or professional doctorate degree programmes, (such as the DAppEdPsy or EdD), must complete and return the form within one month of transferring to the research stage of their programme.

Contents

The Learning Agreement asks students and supervisors to discuss the following:

  • Supervisory and Working Arrangements;
  • Project Planning and Milestone Setting;
  • Intellectual Property;
  • Training and Personal Development;
  • Progression and Monitoring;
  • Submission and Completion;
  • Collaborating and Sponsoring Organisations.

Depending on the nature of the research to be undertaken, it may also be necessary for the student to sign a Confidentiality Agreement.  A Confidentiality Agreement can also be found appended to the Learning Agreement template.

The student and supervisor should review and discuss the Learning Agreement Form during one of their first meetings.  In signing the form the student and supervisor (on behalf of the University) are confirming that the student has received, understood and accepted the expectations of their research programme.

In most cases, the completed Learning Agreement should be returned to support staff in a student’s School/Institute in the first instance, who will then forward it to the Research Student Support Team or Medical Sciences Graduate School where it will be held on the student’s record.
