Lost and stolen immigration documents

If you lose your passport or BRP card in the UK or overseas, you should arrange to have your immigration documents replaced as soon as possible. If you are outside the UK, do not try to travel to the UK without taking the necessary steps.

Passport

If you lose your passport, you should contact your nearest embassy to begin the process of obtaining a new passport. If you are in the UK, you will need to apply for a full passport. If you are overseas (but not in your home country), you may need to obtain a temporary travel document to allow you to travel to the UK or your home country.

If your visa is in the passport you have lost, you will also need to apply for a replacement for this visa before you travel.

Visa in your passport

If you are in the UK and you have lost your passport with your visa in it, you will need to apply for a Biometric Residence Permit card. This will replace the visa in your passport. You will need to apply for a Transfer of Conditions. The cost for this application is £161.

If you are outside of the UK and you have lost your passport with your visa in it, you will need to make a Tier 4 application, but you will not need a new CAS. The cost for this application is £348.

Biometric Residence Permit card (BRP)

If you lose your BRP card, you need to take the following steps:

  • Notify UKVI of the loss of your card. Please ensure that you have made a thorough search for your card, as when you have reported the loss, it cannot be reversed and your card will be cancelled.
  • Report the loss of your card to the local police (wherever you have lost the card). Obtain a crime reference number, if possible.
  • Contact the Visa Support Team to let them know that you have lost your BRP card. They will send you further advice on what to do next.

If you are outside of the UK and you lose your BRP card, you will not be able to replace it straight away. Instead, you should apply for a Single Entry Replacement BRP, which can use to enter the UK. In order to select the correct visa application, you should use the following selection to customised the application form: Type of visa: Other > Purpose of visa: Other > Type of application: Replacement BRP

When you return to the UK, you will need to apply for a new BRP card within one month. To do so, you should complete the BRP(RC) form.

The cost for a postal BRP(RC) application is £56, and can take up to 8 weeks to be processed.

You must ensure that you make your application for a replacement BRP card within the timescales given above. If you do not do so, you can face a civil penalty of up to £1000.

How can the Visa Support Team help you to apply for a BRP card?

When you notify the Visa Support Team that you have lost your BRP card, they will send you information about what to do next.

They will ask you to complete a BRP (RC) form and collect all relevant supporting documents. When you have done so, you will need to contact the Visa Support Team, who will then arrange an appointment to check your BRP (RC) application with you.

The Visa Support Team will then submit your application for a replacement BRP card on your behalf.
