2018/19 Opportunity Scholarship – Students commencing in 2012/13 and beyond

If you’re a UK undergraduate student paying £9,000 tuition fees (or above) and your household income is at or below £35,000 you’ll be considered for an Opportunity Scholarship.

Am I eligible?

You’ll be automatically considered for an Opportunity Scholarship if:

  • You’re registered with the university via S3P (you’ll be sent an email to do this from August 2018)
  • You’ve been income assessed by your funding body and you’ve received your entitlement letter
  • You’ve provided consent to share on your 2018/19 student finance application
  • Your parents/partner have provided consent for your funding body to share their income details with us
  • Your household income is at or below £35,000 per year

You’re not eligible to be considered for the Opportunity Scholarship if:

  • You already hold the equivalent of an honours degree or higher level qualification
  • You’re eligible for NHS funding
  • You’re on a placement year and paying a reduced fee (part year placements will be considered)
  • You’re in receipt of the Promise Scholarship

Is there a deadline?

You won’t normally be awarded a scholarship if this information is provided after Friday 14th June 2019. If you have extenuating circumstances through no fault of your own, such as delays with your funding body, please get in touch with us.

How do I get it?

Once consent to share has been granted and your application is approved we receive your household income details directly from your funding body. There is no separate application form - we will automatically assess you. You can expect to receive a confirmation letter/email between registration and early November.

If you or your parents/partner haven’t provided consent to share you can amend this by ringing the Student Loans Company (SLC) on 0300 100 0612.

What can I get?

How much you get depends on your year of entry, course, and household income. See the attached leaflet (PDF:267KB) for more detail.

When is it paid?

You’ll be paid into the same bank account you receive your student loan in the following instalments:

  • 40% of your award on 21st November 2018
  • 30% of your award on 13th February 2019
  • 30% of your award on 22nd May 2019

If your application is assessed after a payment date you will receive a full backdated payment within 3 weeks (unless the academic year has ended).

If you need to update your bank details you should contact your funding body 4 weeks before your next payment date.

What if I withdraw/suspend?

If you withdraw or suspend we’ll cancel all future payments of your scholarship. You may need to repay some of your scholarship. Please see the attached leaflet (PDF: 341KB) for further information.
