Students who are looking for funding to help cover the cost of an overseas trip may find the list of charities/trusts below a useful starting point.

The British Institute or Persian Studies Travel and Research Bursaries - offers a limited number of bursaries to encourage visits to Iran and the wider Persian world.

The Challenger Trust Bursary Scheme: helps young people taking part in overseas expeditions whose family or financial circumstances have changed dramatically, preventing them from continuing with their project.

Daiwa Scholarships 2015 - offer a unique opportunity to undertake 19 months of language study, work placement and homestay in Japan.

Gilchrist Educational Trust - applications are considered from students who have made proper provision to fund a degree or higher education course but find themselves facing unexpected financial difficulties which may prevent completion of it; also from students who are required, as part of their course, to spend a short period studying abroad

Hazel's Footprints - helps young people who want to take part in voluntary work abroad but are struggling to cover the whole cost.

Sir Peter Holmes Memorial Award - is to encourage individual purposeful travel in Asia by young people, organized by themselves and not part of a group organized by another organization. Applications should be sent by the 14th November 2014.

The Peter Kirk Memorial Fund - each year up to ten Peter Kirk travel scholarships are awarded to promote understanding of Europe amongst young Britons, and of Britain amongst young people from other European countries

The Reg Gilbert International Youth Friendship Trust: can help UK residents who are aged 14 to 25 and are visiting a developing country on a trip lasting at least four weeks.

Roger and Miriam Pilkington Charitable Trust: grants are given to 'enterprising' people aged 18 to 25, particularly those who are undertaking imaginative projects abroad which could be said to broaden horizons, giving them experiences which they may not otherwise have; increase awareness of other cultures and ways of living; or help them understand something of social problems outside their immediate environment.

Winston Churchill Travel Scheme - travel overseas to undertake study projects related to their trade profession or particular interest
