Structural Reliability

You will discover some advanced aspects of this field of study, as well as learning how to apply this knowledge by solving realistic problems.

You will:

  • Combine analysis, probabilistics, and statistics when presenting data
  • Learn about material, load and resistance properties
  • Apply different methods of reliability analysis, including Monte-Carlo and FORM
  • Analyse realistic structural reliability problems using structural mechanical principles

  • Second-moment and transformation methods
  • Codes and structural reliability

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will have:

  • An understanding of the concept of structural reliability & its definitions in the context of structural engineering.
  • Qualification & quantification of structural reliability-statistical measurements of material and structure uncertainty, risk assessment & acceptability.
  • Computation of structural reliability using alternative methods as a function of the nature of the mathematical model associated with the problem.
  • An appreciation of calibration and assessment methodologies applied to new & existing structures.
  • Familiarisation with a software application.
