Institute for Sustainability

We nurture and promote high quality research through a range of support.

Our research contributes to the three global sustainability research challenges identified as impacting Newcastle University’s existing areas of research excellence.

We work with researchers across the University and with external partners to deliver practical, engaged solutions to real-world issues. We achieve this in ways ranging from providing support in preparation of proposals and consultations, to providing research funding through:

How do we allocate funding?

Allocation of funding occurs through a transparent, competitive funding process.  Funding decisions are made through consensus by a panel which includes the Institute Director, Associate Directors, Institute Manager, Researcher Coordinators, and external experts as deemed necessary.  For each funding call a scoring criteria is provided alongside funding call documentation. This states all criteria against which the funding applications will be assessed.

These criteria include:

  • alignment with the stated institute strategy and research challenges
  • interdisciplinarity
  • potential for impact

A full list of all funding deadlines in 2016 is available. For directed calls, detailed information will be published online at least 2 months before the call deadline.

You can also contact our team at with specific queries relating to any of our funding calls.
