Cans and Metal

What can you recycle?

Tins and cans recycling poster

You can recycle all types of clean cans and metals in the grey bins around campus, including:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Foil,
  • Food tins (including pie tins),
  • Sweet tins etc.
  • Cans
  • Metal

Please rinse the cans if they contain food residues.

How can you recycle?

You can add small metal items, cans or tins to the recycling bins found around campus.

We also provide a scrap metal recycling service for those that produce large quantities of metal waste (for instance during an office move) or those who have large items to dispose of.

To dispose of scrap metal please fill in a Porter Request Form to arrange for it to be collected.

Please do not leave metal abandoned on campus, it is a legal requirement for us to ensure a registered waste carry collects our waste. Never leave metal items discarded at the rear of buildings or beside bin compounds.

Interesting fact: Metals can be recycled indefinitely without losing any of their properties. All metals including steel aluminium, nickel, copper, silver, gold, lead, brass and more, can be recycled. Furthermore, recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy and produces only 5% of the CO2 emissions as compared with primary production and reduces the waste going to landfill.
