Reuse

The University is like a small town (we have around 25,000 students and 6000 staff members!) and often, when someone has something they don’t need it is exactly what someone else is looking for!

What can be reused?

  • Lab Equipment
  • Stationary
  • Books
  • Furniture
  • ...and lots more

Apart from the reuse of furniture and resources being great environmentally there are also the following reasons that reusing furniture is a great thing to do:

REDUCE waste disposal costs for the University through reuse of resources

REDUCE purchasing costs by reducing the need to buy new products

REDUCE carbon emissions associated with manufacture and transport of new products

INCREASE resource efficiency

There are two options that are widely used for sharing and redistributing resources:

The Furniture Reuse Email

The furniture reuse emailing list is an informal way to quickly share one or two items that you no longer need with a wide range of people across the University.

How do I sign up?

Signing up the the email list is easy! Simply send an email to sustainable.campus@ncl.ac.uk with the subject "Join Furniture Reuse" to be added to the mailing list.

WARPit

WARPit is similar to Freecycle but allows us to reuse items within our own organisation before offering them elsewhere. It’s easy to use and the system is particularly useful for exchanging furniture within the University. When we are redistributing large amounts of furniture from departments we always advertise it on WARPit. If you have a large volume if furniture that needs a new home please contact Sustainable Campus (sustainable.campus@ncl.ac.uk) and we may be able to assist in surveying and listing items for redistribution. More information on how WARPit works can be found here.

How do I sign up?

Visit our WARPit site (www.warp-it.co.uk/newcastleuni) and click ‘Register Now’, using your @ncl.ac.uk email to be approved immediately. Once you have registered check back regularly to see if there’s anything someone’s getting rid of that you need. If you have any issues registering for WARPit please contact sustainable.campus@ncl.ac.uk.

Remember to add items you don’t need to keep the process going; we need people to advertise and claim items to make best use of the system.

***You can only upload items that belong to the University on this system, it should not be used to upload anything from home***
