Course overview

This five-year Mapping and Geospatial Data Science MSci Honours degree focuses on developing your practical, technical and professional skills and includes a placement year so that you graduate career ready with real-world working experience.

Our hands-on degree allows you to get used to working with industry-standard, state-of-the-art equipment to ensure you develop skills and knowledge of measuring, mapping, recording and managing information. You apply this knowledge to a range of areas, from urban and rural to coastal and the open sea.

You will benefit from our strong links with local organisations in the industry and undertake field trips throughout your degree so that your professional skills are continually improving.

Your studies will include outdoor and computer-based practical work and you'll learn a wide range of techniques, such as:

  • engineering surveying
  • 3D laser scanning
  • mobile map-making
  • programming

In Stage 3 you take a paid year in industry. While gaining first-hand experience of the surveying sector, you also develop your practical skills. In your final year, advanced specialist modules like advanced geodesy and city analytics prepare you for your future career.

Most degrees are divided into stages. Each stage lasts for one academic year, and you'll complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each stage.

You study modules in Geographic Information Systems; surveying; GNSS and its applications; principles of remote sensing; quantitative methods for geomatics; and informatics.

You develop your mathematics and study skills, and take either a GIS or surveying field course.

You will spend the year on a work placement in the UK or abroad. You’ll gain valuable practical experience in the sector.

Your modules include photogrammetry and laser scanning II; geohazards and deformation of the Earth; offshore surveying; environmental informatics; applied geospatial data handling; professional practice; and law and land use.

You’ll also undertake a second, eight-day residential field course.

You study the environment business; advanced geodesy; and city analytics. You undertake an individual project on a geospatial data topic of your choice and choose from a range of optional modules including traffic and environment management for sustainability; intelligent transport systems; big data analytics; and career development.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching methods

You usually study six modules per semester, with an average weekly timetable comprising approximately 20 to 25 contact hours. Each module involves around two one-hour lectures per week.

You also complete several field/computer practicals of around three hours each during the semester.

Modules taught in Stage 1, 2 and 4 are taught linear, e.g. throughout the semester with two lectures a week. During your final year (Stage 5) modules are delivered in two-week blocks (two weeks for each module).

You'll be assessed through a combination of:

  • Coursework

  • Examinations – practical or online

Skills and experience

Practical skills

Your degree will involve lots of hands-on and practical learning and you'll develop skills in observation, recording, processing, hypothesis testing and using equipment.

In your first year, you'll go to the Lake District for an eight-day field course to put your surveying skills to practise. Your third year includes another eight-day field course, where you'll use advanced geospatial data science collection and processing methodologies.

Research skills

In your final year, you'll conduct an individual research project where you can explore a topic of your choosing in greater detail, this will develop your investigative, research and presentation skills.


Work placement

Get career ready with a work placement and leave as a confident professional in your field. You'll apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organisation in the world, and receive University support from our dedicated team to secure your dream placement. Work placements take place in Stage 3.

You'll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing your professional expertise.

Facilities and environment


As a geospatial student at Newcastle, you will join a close-knit community within the School of Engineering.

  • GPS and electronic survey equipment

  • state-of-the-art computer software


To support you in your studies, all new students entering year 1 or year 2 will receive:

  • a tablet so you can download the online learning resources you'll need for your course (helping us to make our campus more sustainable)
  • a start-up pack containing essential personal protective equipment and textbooks

You'll have the support of an academic member of staff as a personal tutor throughout your degree to help with academic and personal issues.

Peer mentors will help you in your first year. They are fellow students who can help you settle in and answer any questions you have, when starting university.

You'll also benefit from:

  • a team-building field trip in North Yorkshire in your first week, to help you quickly settle in
  • our high level of practical and group work, which helps you get to know staff and fellow students

International Fee Students


The maximum fee that we are permitted to charge for home fee-paying students is set by the UK government.

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.

You will be charged tuition fees for each year of your degree programme (unless you are on a shorter exchange programme). 

The tuition fee amount you will pay may increase slightly year on year as a result of inflation.

For courses commencing from September 2021 and beyond, EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fees or Student Finance England support.

If you are from the EU you will pay international tuition fees.
