Aims

Students will develop a range of academic and professional skills (building on those learned in Stage 1). The module will help to prepare students for their research projects, and will encourage refection on how these skills can be applied throughout their university career and beyond

Outline Of Syllabus

Induction week: module launch with careers session and paper/dissertation critique session

Understanding research science: differences and importance of natural and social science.
Research ethics
Differences and importance of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
Qualitative methods and data analysis - Participant observation, interviews, focus groups

Presenting data Using Excel to manipulate data: sorting, pivot tables, concatenating, look-up tables; looking at graphs/drawing graphs

Quantitative research: sampling and experimental design
Summary statistics, comparing categorical data, T tests ANOVA, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-squared
Links between continuous data: univariate regression, correlation, interaction
Multivariate regression and ordination: PCA, RA, Factor analysis

Project planning and management

Advanced research and writing skills
Advanced literature search, writing skills, Endnote, critical review/impact assessment of papers

Career planning, graduate skills reflection and development
