To provide students with detailed knowledge and encourage understanding of the principles of applied crop protection for temperate crops. To develop skills in researching, organising and presenting scientific information, in verbal and written forms, both individual and small groups.
Outline Of Syllabus
Weed, pest and disease control strategies for cereals, oilseed rape, potatoes and sugar beet.
A major focus of this module will be on chemical control options for arable crop production and the consequences of increasing levels of resistance to these chemicals.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures deliver the underlying knowledge needed by students to understand the relationships between crop protection and performance. The field visit develops some of the material that has been covered in lectures and provides supplementary information and provides an opportunity for communication with professionals in the industry. Student oral presentations further extends knowledge and understanding of key subjects and issues and also develops a number of key skills e.g. time management, organisation, team work, oral communication.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The written examination assesses a student's understanding of the key content of the delivered module and information from a range of other sources. It enables him/her to demonstrate and synthesise knowledge and understanding of the effects of chemical control options within a Integrated Management approach to crop protection.
The oral presentation assesses a student's ability to work both as an individual and as part of a team to select and present relevant, up-to-date information on a chosen subject and contribute to the audience's knowledge and understanding of the subject.
The visit report assesses a student' ability to integrate knowledge and understanding acquired over the programme of lectures and seminars to promote the learning experience and develop key skills that are essential in practical, commercial and research situations.
Study abroad students may request a take-away exam paper to be returned via NESS.
