This module aims to introduce mechanical properties of geological material (both rock and soil) and how to use geological knowledge while designing an engineering structure such as tunnels and bridges. The module covers both theory of rock and soil mechanics as well as commonly used engineering lab tests. The knowledge gained through this module can also be applied mining industry (designing open and close pit mines) as well as environmental management. A sound rock and structural geology knowledge as well as mathematics are essential for the module.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Background knowledge of rock and soil mechanics will be thought in the lectures. These lectures will include basics of the rock mass, geological structures, weathering and their relationships with each other. The background knowledge will be solidified with physical and mathematical approached to hypothetical engineering problems during workshops. Students will understand the importance of lab tests during the lectures and workshops. Most commonly used lab test will be introduced in practicals and students will carry out some of them themselves. This will give better lab, observation and interpretation skills to students.

The exam will test the knowledge and understanding of engineering geology.
The design report will test the ability to understand the problem, collect and interpret data, and produce a unique design solution.
