1. To build upon the basic foundation in the language systems provided in CHN1065 with a view to further study.
2. To allow students to continue to develop receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills.
3. To continue to provide students with skills necessary to become better language learners.
You will learn a further 220-250 Chinese characters, making a total of well over 400! By the end, you will be communicating orally in simple everyday situations.
We use a task-based, communicative approach, and encourage peer learning through pair and group work. Assessment is by portfolio of written coursework, aural exam, oral exam, and written exam. Building a portfolio of assessed coursework helps you to monitor your progress and stimulates independent learning and learner autonomy. Formal exams provide a summary assessment before continuing on to CHN2010 at Stage 2.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Key grammatical structures and vocabulary are introduced and practised using an integrated communicative approach. Oral and aural skills (i.e. speaking and listening), in addition to reading skills, are practised throughout the course in task-based classroom activities involving pair and group work. Writing skills are introduced in class and practised outside the classroom in creative assignments set by the lecturer.
In order to ensure that 134 hours of independent guided study takes place, each contact hour is followed by homework assignments relating to what has just been introduced/practised (many derive from the workbook and character workbook accompanying the core textbook). There is a minimum homework submission requirement of 70%, with this percentage being calculated every 6 weeks. Where appropriate, individualised formative feedback is provided (e.g. for writing assignments involving a creative element).
Students are required to spend at least one hour a week in the Language Resource Centre, working on listening work prescribed by the teacher.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Continuous assessment carried out by means of the portfolio of written coursework allows students to assess their progress in writing skills, vocabulary acquisition/usage and grammar across the semester. The formal written, aural and oral examinations provide a summative assessment as well as a chance for students and staff to review progress before continuing on to CHN2010.
Knowledge of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary are assessed in all assessed work. Knowledge of the phonological system is assessed by oral and aural examination, while that of the orthographic system is assessed via the portfolio of written coursework and formal written paper.
Regular Vocabulary and Grammar tests are necessary in order to allow students to acquire competence steadily. It also provides the opportunity to have constant feedback on their performance.
