To understand the principles of digital and computer based process control systems. To learn how to design and implement digital controllers, from simple to more advanced algorithms.
This module introduces the concepts associated with computer based process control strategies and the mathematics required to design digital controllers. It also emphasises the use of models in control systems designs
Outline Of Syllabus
Role of computers in process control; fundamental difference between continuous time and discrete time control systems; basic mathematics of sampled data systems; discretised PI/PID controllers; design via the Synthesis Equation; pole-placement control; discrete models for controller design; minimum variance and generalised minimum variance control.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The examination is an appropriate way to assess both theoretical understanding and problem solving skills under time-constraints. The assignment assesses the student’s ability to apply theoretical principles as well as their ability to simulate and analyse the behaviour of control systems.
