ECO3011 : Intercalating Year Personal Learning Record

Aims

This module is designed to enable students participating in an international study placement or a work placement in the UK or abroad, to gain credits towards their degree back in Newcastle. Students will be encouraged to appreciate that a “learning experience” is not restricted to academic situations like a degree programme but can include any situation in which they may be involved during their placement year. The module will encourage students to critically reflect on their learning and development in relation to the Graduate Skills Framework. In consonance with the overall aims of the degrees offered by NUBS this module aims to:
a)       build on the skills gained at Stages 1 and 2;

b)       provide an in-depth knowledge and understanding of studying and/or working in the country of residence during the intercalating year (UK or abroad);

c)       develop an appreciation of studying and/or working in a cross-cultural setting, where appropriate;

d)       develop the ability to analyse the impact of culture on business in the country of residence during the intercalating year (UK or abroad);

e)       encourage critical reflection on personal, academic, linguistic development (as appropriate) and
employability during the intercalating year.

Outline Of Syllabus

Students on a study placement should complete a maximum of 60 credits (30 ECTS) per semester. They will be required to attend lectures and seminars and attempt all assessed work and exams as timetabled by the host institution.
Students on a work placement will be required to carry out tasks and duties as assigned to them by their line manager/supervisor.
In addition, all students are required to reflect on their experiences during the intercalating year. Instead of following a specific syllabus students will record, in a systematic manner, their learning and development through a series of personal learning records submitted via Turnitin on Blackboard throughout the year. The content of the ePortfolio blogs will define the individual “learning syllabus” for each student and will determine the issues on which the student will focus on in their final Reflective Learning Account (ECO3015)

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Face to face contact hours with academic staff are low on this module as students are registered on the module whilst on their intercalating year. However, the Module Leader will maintain contact with students and will be available by Skype, email and telephone in the event of any queries or problems. Written feedback via the ePortfolio will also be provided three times during the year
The module is designed to encourage students on their intercalating year to focus on their learning and personal development. Through independent learning they will become used to reflecting in a systematic and sustained manner on goals, processes and achievements. The majority of work necessary for successful completion of this module will take place through this reflective learning activity which is explicitly related to the intended Learning Outcomes.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The Personal Learning Records will provide a record of the students’ learning and personal development during the intercalating year and will be used as the basis for the Reflective Learning Account (ECO3015) at the end of the placement.

The coursework is designed to encourage students to reflect on their own learning and development throughout the intercalating year and to relate their experiences to the Graduate Skills Framework.
