1. To study the classification of industrial control systems and robots.
2. To study the modelling of industrial plant, sensors and actuators
3. To study the on-off control of industrial applications with the use of Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs)~
4. To study the application and tuning of PID controllers to industrial plant
5. To study the theory and application of Fuzzy controllers.
6. To study the anatomy, kinematics and control of robotic arms.
Outline Of Syllabus
Industrial On-Off control with the use of classical mechanical relays and PLCs.
Sensor and actuator characteristics and modelling
Plant modelling - linear and nonlinear plant characteristics, plant linearisation, PID controller design.
Fuzzy set theory, Fuzzy controllers and AI methods applied to industrial control problems
Nonlinear industrial control problems - interconnected tanks, inverted pendulum.
Robot position & velocity kinematic analysis theory and its application to classical manipulators and wrist mechanisms, Denavit-Hartenberg theory, role of homogeneous transformations.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The multiple choice test will require knowledge of the basic materials presented in the lectures. The examination requires from the student a formal knowledge of the basic principles of robotics and on-off control.
Semester 1 Study Abroad students will be able to sit the assessment earlier.
