1. To enable the student to identify and to research individual subject matter and content, and to find appropriate formal and technical means for its development.
2. To prepare the student for the sustained practices, studio specialisms and increased level of independence of Stage 3.
3. To further develop the student's ability to critically assess studio work and to begin to place it into context.
4. To extend the student's knowledge of a range of approaches to Fine Art practice.
5. To increase the student's awareness of profesional practice.
The Fine Art studio-based module follows FIN2013 and is designed to consolidate and further develop a self-directed, informed and well-supported studio practice.
Students determine the main focus of the studio activity within the broad range of Fine Art practice (painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital and time-based media). In addition to their principal area/areas of studio activity students will select a Life Work Art strand designed to introduce the context in which professional artists work. Students carry out, an individual or group project that takes place outside the University, such as a placement with a gallery, artist or visual arts organisation, or a public art project or exhibition.
Tutorials, crits, peer review, optional workshops, gallery visits and the Visiting Speaker's programme continue to support the student in further exploring the formal, technical and conceptual aspects of an increasingly self-initiated and self-directed practice. As such it is designed to provide a foundation for Stage 3 by enabling the student to both define a personal direction in their practice, and to begin to locate it within a contemporary fine art context.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students attend a schedule of studio-based tutorials, group crits and peer review.
Students participate in a Life Work Art strand.
Students attend weekly lectures in the Visiting Speakers Prorgamme.
Students can fruther support their studio-based learning through optional workshops.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures through the visiting speaker programme provide an introduction to the contemporary art context, professional practice and present a range of practical, conceptual and theoretical approaches to Fine Art practice.
Life Work Art strands provide an introduction to the context in which professional artists work.
Tutorials and group crits allow students to discuss their work with a tutor and/or peers and to critically reflect on their work and progress. Tutorials also provide feedback from tutors and peers.
Peer reviews allow students to familiarise themselves with the assessment criteria and to critically reflect on their own work and that of their peers. It provides them with written feedback from their peers.
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The presentation of studio and strand work allows students to provide evidence of: sound research and development methods; exploration of technical processes and materials; identification of subject matter; formal and conceptual considerations and the capacity to manage and direct their practice with an increasing degree of independence and self-reflection. Within the portfolio, tutorial record forms provide evidence of the student's engagement with teaching and ability to reflect, plan and respond.
Peer review of work in progress provides formative assessment and feedback half way through the semester.
