Outline Of Syllabus

Researching History will prepare students for their stage 3 dissertation HIS3020. The students will be guided in formulating a research question and in writing a literature review for that question. Students will have considerable scope for selecting a historical period, place and topic (from the subject areas taught at Stage 2 or other topics that interest them). In the workshops the students will critique their own literature review and start discussing the preparation of their sources portfolio. The students will be guided in how to search archives, select 5 sources and analyse those collectively in a 2000 word commentary.
Before the end of the module the students will need to formulate a short proposal of their intended stage 3 dissertation topic.
