To introduce N400 and N402 students to a range of key skills that are vital for success as an Accounting and Finance professional. To introduce the mathematical and statistical techniques and concepts necessary in the field of Accounting and Finance.

Outline Of Syllabus

The key skills element and the mathematics/ statistical element will be taught concurrently.
•       Introduction: Time management, study skills and the Business game (2 hours)
•       Team working task (2 hours)
•       Behavioural aspects of the successful professional (2 hours)
•       Presentation skills (2 hours)
•       Business Game application (2 hours)
•       Presentation (2 hours)
•       Key Skills (2 hours)
•       Basics of linear and non-linear equations (2 lecture sessions for non-A-Level students ONLY)
•       Linear equations and non-linear equations (2 lecture sessions)
•       Differentiation, partial differentiation and optimisation (4 lecture sessions)
•       Descriptive statistics (3 lecture sessions)
•       Basic probability and distribution (3 lecture sessions)
•       Estimation and hypothesis testing (3 lecture sessions)
•       Regression analysis (3 lecture sessions)
•       Revision (2 lecture session)

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Key skills sessions will be interactive sessions, taught in two hour blocks by both academic staff and representatives from professional bodies and professional firms. Mathematics and statistics (for both N400 and NN14 students) will be taught by formal lectures to introduce concepts and techniques, supported by workshop sessions (classroom and computer based) where students have the opportunity to practise and obtain feedback on their attempts at the questions set.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The formal examination and individual assignment will test the mathematics and statistical concepts and techniques introduced in the module.

The key professional skills will be assessed via a group report and presentation, relating to a business game. In this assessment students will therefore need to demonstrate team working, planning and organisation skills, as well as business awareness, numeracy and data interpretation/ analysis skills.
