A1 - To introduce fundamental engineering economic principles and principles of cost estimating for new projects;
A2 - To make students aware of contemporary regulatory influences on design and operation;
A3 - To make students aware of current design trends and innovations in marine design;
A4 - To provide opportunity for additional lectures on topics outside of the formal curriculum.
Outline Of Syllabus
Engineering economic principles and economics criteria; the role of classification societies and regulatory influences on design and operation; design for production and project management; principles of cost estimating; current trends and innovations in ship design, marine engineering design, small craft technology and offshore design.
The lectures series is based on inviting guest lecturers from industry and academia organised by the module contributors.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The use of lectures, including guest contributions from industry, is an effective means to provide students with the acquisition of the knowledge relating to IKO1 - IKO3. The lecture series provides a means to provide students with insight into contemporary issues in innovations in research, development and design in marine technology as well as to introduce them to topics not covered in the formal curriculum. This provides opportunity to develop the related skills (ISO1 - ISO3).

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The written examination will assess the breadth of knowledge, understanding and ability to perform techno-economic calculation and cost estimations to assess the viability of new marine projects (IKO1-IKO3). In doing so the examination assesses literacy, numeracy and active learning. This medium also allows students to demonstrate the intended outcomes across a wide range of topics from the lecture series and background reading on current trends in design research and development in the marine field. The Graduate Skills Framework entries indicated as 'A' are also assessed in this way.
