Aims

The module covers fundamental aspects of common ferrous and non-ferrous engineering materials, relevant to selection, design and manufacture. The influence of the microstructure and processing methods on the materials properties will be discussed.

- Mechanical properties and mechanical testing (tensile test, hardness, impact test)
- Thermal properties
- Binary phase diagrams
- Fe-Fe3C phase diagram
- Relationship between microstructure, heat treatment conditions and properties of plain carbon steel
- Hardening and tempering
- Common manufacturing processes of metals
- Materials selection using Edupack software.

Coursework (PC assessments) provides the most effective way to assess both theoretical understanding and problem solving skills under time constraint as required by industry. Coursework enable more realistic engineering problems to be set. The candidates will be aware of the definitions, SI units and dimensions of physical quantities and be able to apply the broad base of scientific principles which underpin the characteristics and uses of the engineering discipline.
