1. To provide a detailed knowledge and understanding of the theories and general practices of the most relevant analytical techniques and their application in identification and measurement of xenobiotics in biological matrices.
2. To provide an overview of the current use and future trends in the use of laboratory animals in pharmaceutical research.
3. To provide the practical skills necessary for the humane use of animals in biomedical research.
Outline Of Syllabus
Theory and practice of drug extraction from biological samples.
Chromatography theory and practice including, gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography LC and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Importance of animals in pharmacology research and development.
Basic animal (rodent) handling, anaesthesia and surgical techniques.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The lectures provide the students with the basic theoretical knowledge and information to support the learning outcomes of the modules and provide the students with the foundation with which to carry out the practicals of the module. The practicals will allow the students to apply their theoretical knowledge and gain expertise in techniques currently used in the pharmaceutical industry. The seminars will focus on experimental design and will give the students the opportunity to test their understanding of the importance of refinement of research methodology particularly with respect to experiments involving animals.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The refinement of methods paper will be used to assess knowledge, independent learning and understanding of material relevant to the module, the ability to integrate this material and to communicate clearly and the ability for critical thought. The practical lab report will be used to test the student's ability to acquire and accurately use laboratory skills including analysis of data and clear presentation of findings and conclusions. The associated calculations promote the skills of reasoning and data interpretation and test numeracy assessment of animal handling and restraint provides evidence of professional and practical skills. The ability to perform the practical skills in surgical and animal handling will be assessed on a pass/fail basis to demonstrate a minimum level of required competence.
FMS Schools offering Semester One modules available as ‘Study Abroad’ will, where required, provide an alternative assessment time for examinations that take place after the Christmas vacation. Coursework with submissions dates after the Christmas vacation will either be submitted at an earlier date or at the same time remotely.
The form of assessment will not vary from the original.
