The module aims to:
o Introduce advanced terms, concepts and premises underlying sociolinguistic research, with particular respect to the Labovian paradigm, broadly construed, and successor/alternative paradigms
o Give a broad understanding of fieldwork techniques used within these sub-disciplines
o Apply the terminological distinctions, principles, methods and concepts used within these sub-disciplines to actual and novel case studies that explore the inter-relationships between language and society.
o Further explore specific issues raised at the individual level in Labovian Sociolinguistics and successor/alternative paradigms at the community and national level.
Outline Of Syllabus
This course covers topics and methods relevant to the advanced study of sociolinguistics. Each year the focus will be on a different topic that is directly relevant to the on-going research of the module leader and to the interest of likely participants. Topics may include include language and gender, language and nationalism/ethnicity and the role of traditional speaker variables in language contact contexts.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
LECTURES: Will be used, primarily, to impart information and provide overall coherence for the module.
SEMINARS: Will be used, primarily, to build skills in linguistic analysis and will, therefore, focus on problem-solving/numeracy. They also aim to enhance interpretation of sociolinguistic approaches to language and society, improve oral/poster presentation skills and build team-work. Fieldwork projects will also be planned and developed in seminars.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The poster presentation skills assignment assesses the student's ability to synthesize information concisely and present it coherently in oral/written form. It also assesses the student's ability to work collaboratively.
The essay tests written communication skills; analytical/problem solving skills (depending on the question the student chooses); critical thinking/conceptual understanding/knowledge and ability to construct a logical argument.
The DECTE corpus, which will be used in the essay, requires submission of a form to gain permission to access it.
