Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the nutritional requirements of exercisers and athletes in a range of different sports and the role of nutrition in optimising performance. The enhancement of exercise and performance through nutritional strategies and ergogenic aids will be considered. Students will also gain insight into the role of a sports nutritionist in a range of different sports.

Outline Of Syllabus

The syllabus will cover the following topics:

•       Working as a sport and exercise nutritionist and the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register
•       Energy and carbohydrate requirements for exercise Nutritional requirements for competition
•       Fluid and electrolyte balance
•       Post-exercise nutrition strategies
•       Proteins and amino acids in sports nutrition
•       Nutritional interventions to increase fat metabolism
•       Nutrition and immune function
•       Ergogenic aids
•       Nutrition for team sports
•       Nutrition for weight-making sports
•       Nutrition for endurance sports
•       Nutrition for the female athlete
•       Nutritional considerations for the young and masters athlete
•       Nutrition, exercise and GI distress
•       Exercise nutrition for the non-athlete – fitness and metabolic health
•       Nutrition for the diabetic athlete

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures are used to deliver essential new learning material, which are then followed up by group work teaching to develop the foundation information provided, plus independent guided reading. Practical sessions will provide students with opportunities to carry out dietary assessment and dietary modulation in IT clusters. Defined hours for reflective learning will promote the student to evaluate their learning so far and identify weaknesses that need to be followed up by further reading. Time has been allocated for listening to podcasts and exploring online discussions and forums in sports nutrition. Time has also been specified for assessment preparation.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The oral infographic presentation will provide students with the opportunity to 1) design an engaging infographic, a method of knowledge exchange, which is increasingly popular in sports nutrition, and, 2) apply their knowledge and skills in sport and exercise nutrition to a simulated research trial. This will reflect real-life practice for a sport and exercise nutritionist. The presentation will develop communication skills and provide students with the opportunity to develop and synthesise materials into a clear and understandable format.

The examination will test the students' factual knowledge and application of this knowledge to real life scenarios. It will encourage students to draw from a number of topic areas to answer the exam questions.

Formative assessment will take the form of practice questions that will be provided to students and time will be allocated to write answers in class the following week. This will be followed by peer review discussion of answers in a seminar session.
