To develop systematic knowledge and understanding of the role of and technologies available for energy storage (supplementing the technologies covered elsewhere in SPG8007, SPG8008 and SPG8028), with a particular focus on their impact for the exploitation of renewable energy resources.
Outline Of Syllabus
• Energy storage for grid management: centralised energy storage, distributed storage.
• Energy storage for renewable energy resource exploitation: renewable energy in grid and isolated systems, distributed (local) storage e.g. for isolated systems.
• Energy storage technologies (in addition to those covered in SPG8007, SPG8008 and SPG8028): pumped, flywheel storage, compressed air, etc.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Students are expected to use the Pre-School Study (Guided Independent Learning) to assimilate the necessary knowledge content from the applied course materials and their own further reading around the syllabus indicated by these, working at their own pace (Intended Knowledge Outcomes 1-3).
The scheduled teaching sessions in the Intensive School week are intended to reinforce and consolidate that initial independent study and to progress students towards the Intended Skills Outcomes 1-2. Time within that week also allows for independent revision towards the end of week Written Examination.
The Post-School Assignment enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the topic by focussing on using their acquired knowledge to demonstrate the Intended Skills Outcomes 1-2.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The Written Examination tests the students ability to work effectively under time constraints as well as giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their systematic knowledge and critical and cognitive skills across the module syllabus (Intended Knowledge Outcomes 1-3). This assessment includes written examination, problem-solving and numeracy skills.
In addition to these skills, the Post-School Assignment assesses Information Literary Skills, as well as giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their critical awareness and understanding of how to apply their knowledge in a relevant technical context (Indended Skills Outcomes 1-2).
In order to pass the module, students must attain a minimum of 40% in each component of assessment. Failure to reach 40% in each component will result in a module mark no greater than 49%. this rule has been introduced as an accreditation requirement for the Reflex programme.
