Newcastle is about as close as you can get to the coastline as any city, and students here make the most of it! A 25-minute Metro journey can take you to one of four Blue Flag award-winning beaches, with a whole host of attractions which are popular all year-round.

Tynemouth and Cullercoats

The neighbouring towns of Tynemouth and Cullercoats have beautiful, Blue-Flag beaches and are popular all year round. Hire a board and take surf lessons, visit one of the beach-front cafes or barbeque on the busy beach in the summer.

A short stroll from the beach you’ll find the village centre, which is always busy at weekends due to its great choice of independent cafes, bistros, bars, and of course – fish and chips!

Within Tynemouth’s Victorian Metro station there’s a busy weekend market with stalls offering street-food, gifts, and handcrafted items.

Whitley Bay

Another of the region’s Blue Flag beaches can be found at Whitley Bay, which is the place to go for some classic British seaside fun – amusements, fish and chips, ice cream, and a stroll along the promenade.
