INSIGHTS Public Lecture: The Newcastle way: Leading advancements in neuromuscular research By Professor Volker Straub
Launched in November 2014, the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre consolidates Newcastle’s world-leading record in research and care for neuromuscular diseases. Based at the Centre for Life and working across Newcastle University and the NHS, the Centre focusses on translational research to improve the health outcomes of those living with neuromuscular diseases. The lecture will focus on recent successes and explore developments in the field.
Biography: Professor Volker Straub, Newcastle University
Professor Volker Straub is the Director of the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre and Deputy Dean for Newcastle University’s Translational and Clinical Research Institute. He is a Consultant in Neuromuscular Genetics and Paediatrics, and an NIHR Senior Investigator.
Volker has a long-standing interest in the pathogenesis of genetic muscle diseases, with research involving disease models, the application of imaging technologies, next generation sequencing, and machine learning. He is the principal investigator for several natural history studies and interventional clinical trials in rare neuromuscular disorders. He is the current president of the World Muscle Society and an author on over 450 peer-reviewed publications.
