Covid-19 Update, PGR students - 19 March 2020

Covid-19 Update Message to PGR students - 19 March 2020

Lucy Backhurst, Academic Registrar shares the latest updates with PGR students.

Dear PGR students,

You’ll have seen the message that I have sent today to all students, but I wanted to write to you separately to address some questions we have been asked over the last few days. We understand that the current situation and the impact that it may have on your research is extremely worrying. I am writing to provide you with an update on action that the University is taking and issues you may wish to consider as we support you through this difficult time.

Supporting you in your studies

Please be assured that any disruption to your studies will be carefully considered in order for us to understand how best we can support you.  We are aware that due to the circumstances, you may find yourself working in a different and/or challenging environment – having to work remotely or deal with more daily caring responsibilities for example - and that these may impact on your studies.  Impact on your research degree can usually be dealt with either by instigating an interruption to studies, or by giving an extension to your thesis submission deadline. Your Supervisor and/or Graduate School will be able to guide you on the most appropriate option for your circumstances.

More information about your situation

With the rapidly changing nature of COVID-19 and the advice and guidance that is available to us, we would find it very helpful if you could provide us with information on your intentions around your studies at this time. This will also help us better understand how we can support you. To facilitate this, we have created an online form, and we would encourage you to complete the relevant form for the Faculty in which you are registered:

Advice on primary data collection in the UK

We understand that you will be concerned about the impact that the Covid-19 situation will have on your ability to complete your research. Therefore, we are in the process of developing guidance for students who wish to do primary data collection in the UK. This will be available on the website by close of play tomorrow.

FAQs for PGR students

We have created a dedicated FAQ section for our PGR students.  These FAQs will be updated regularly to provide you with detailed information as the situation develops.  Please check these pages regularly for updates.  If you require further guidance in relation to your specific circumstances, you can contact your Supervisor and/or Graduate Schools and staff will do their best to provide you with the information you need. The contact details for the two Graduate Schools are:
