COVID-19 Impact Scholarships

COVID-19 Impact Scholarships

Stipend support for our PhD and MPhil students.

Purpose and Process

The purpose of this scholarship scheme is to provide PhD and MPhil students with stipend support at the UKRI rate of payment for a period of up to 12 weeks beyond the end of minimum candidature. Completed applications should be submitted to Doctoral College for the assessment and award process.

To be eligible in the current application round:

  • Your minimum candidature must end between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2021

The end of your minimum candidature is one year before the “thesis deadline” as shown in ePortfolio.

The next submission deadline is 1 October 2020.

  • If you apply by 1 October 2020, we will provide you with a decision by 1 November 2020.

Students whose minimum candidature ends after this time will be able to apply at a later date, approximately 5-6 months before their minimum candidature period ends. Students whose minimum candidature ends on or after 1 April 2022 will not be eligible for this scheme. A full list of deadlines and the application process for these later dates will be published nearer these deadlines and will be available via the PGR FAQs.

Students who are not eligible for this scheme may be eligible to apply for a ‘Fee Free Extension to their Minimum candidature’ or a ‘Fee Free Extension to their Thesis Submission Deadline’ if progress has been disrupted due to Covid-19. The PGR FAQs provide further information.

Also, you may be able to access the Student Financial Support Fund. This fund is available to PGR students but is only intended to assist students in cases of unexpected or immediate financial difficulty. Awards are therefore designed to alleviate immediate difficulty while students are encouraged to pursue alternative funding sources. Further information is available here.

Funding from the University is not available for those students whose original funding body already provides stipend support for longer than 3 years or has agreed to fund a specific extension to an original 3-year period because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Funding will not be provided unless the criteria as set out in Appendix 1 Extension type B-D are met.

Form Completion

COVID-19 Impact Scholarships Application Form

The form contains spaces for you and your supervisor(s) to support your application for this scholarship together with a box for you to suggest the period of scholarship support that you feel is needed. The application review panel might also consider relevant details in your most recent Annual Progress Review or Additional Support Review; for this reason, the date of this review is requested. To help you to complete the form, Appendix 1 shows a non-exhaustive list of examples of reasons why you might require an extension together with representative periods of funding that might be granted.
