Exams and Assessment

Advice for current Undergraduate and Masters students

We recognise that we are all in exceptional circumstances with regard to the assessments for your modules, your progression from one stage to the next, and, for many of you, the award of your final degree and its classification. Because of this, the University Executive Board and Senate have approved time-limited policy changes relating to assessment, whilst the Deans of Taught Programmes in consultation with Schools have been endeavouring to provide all students with the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement and potential through their degree programmes, whilst maintaining the value, security and credibility of Newcastle awards.

There are three key changes we need you to note:

  1. There will be no further face-to-face examinations during the 2019-20 academic year (in either the Summer or August assessment period).
  2. Amendments have been made to the shape of the 2019-20 academic year to provide a structure more appropriate to the current circumstances; such as changes to exam, assessment, feedback, Board of Examiners, Summer and August assessment schedules, and graduation dates.
  3. There is an introduction of a Safety Net for all taught students where possible (some accrediting bodies may not permit this for the programmes they accredit) in all years of study, in respect of their assessments, progression, awards and classifications.

The advice and information outlined on this page applies to Exams and Assessments in the 2019/20 academic year. The information on this page may change, in line with ongoing updates to the Government guidance as the situation around Covid-19 progresses. Please make sure you check back regularly for the most up to date information.
