Hedgehog Survey Workshop

Hedgehog Survey Workshop

Thursday 19 March 2020

In light of the ongoing concerns around Coronavirus, Newcastle University has taken the decision to cancel all non-essential events until the end of term (27 March).

This decision applies to events within Climate Action Week NCL.

While this is obviously disappointing news, the University is committed to taking every precaution to limit the spread of the virus within our community and to protect the wellbeing of our students, colleagues and members of the public who visit our campus.

Thank you for your understanding. We will look forward to welcoming you back to our events as soon as they resume.

For Newcastle University staff and students

  • Rom 1.20, King’s Gate
  • Thursday 19 March 2020; 14:00-16:00

This event will inform you about the current situation with hedgehogs in the UK. It will equip you with the skills to complete hedgehog surveys on campus.

We need to enhance and protect habitats for hedgehogs to replenish the numbers of this native UK mammal. Hedgehogs don’t mind urbanised areas, but they do need food and shelter while they’re making their way through them.

We have been working on improving areas of our campus for hedgehogs. We have let green spaces grow wilder to provide safety for hedgehogs and encourage insects. We have installed hedgehog houses to give an extra option for hibernation.

During this training event, you’ll learn how to complete a hedgehog survey and will make the tracking equipment needed. You’ll complete the survey at the end of April, after the hibernation period is over. The survey will inform us of where we have hedgehogs on campus so that we can put in place improvements.
