The government's Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) scheme provides funding for projects between UK universities and businesses.
If your business has an idea but not all the in-house expertise needed to develop it, a KTP can help.
KTPs are designed to develop or create a new process, product or service and, most importantly, transfer that knowledge into your institution to give you new capabilities.
We match academics with businesses or not-for-profits to create innovation and generate wealth for the UK economy. A KTP will help you
KTP is a UK-wide programme which has helped businesses for more than 40 years to improve competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills. KTPs are part-funded by Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board). The aim is to generate a profit for the company (typically £250 to £750K within five years) and create an academic challenge. We employ a KTP Associate to work exclusively on the project based at your company premises. Associates are supervised by an academic half a day week. Project partners work together to create a new capability, with knowledge transferred into the company for long-term profit generation. This distinguishes the KTP product from consultancy. Projects last between 12 and 36 months, depending on the company’s needs.
Innovate UK administers KTP grant funding. The company contribution to each project is dependent on the following factors:
Size of business
Length of project
Budget requirements
The total KTP package is worth £70-85K per year. The typical cost for a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) is approximately £23-28K per year. This equates to 67% grant funding (£47-57K) from the government. For a large company, the total cost is approximately £35-42K per year, 50% grant funded.
