Aims

This module provides an introduction to key transport policy document and discussion of past, present and future transport growth in the UK and elsewhere, the reasons for this growth, theories of how individuals make transport choices and methods for managing travel demand, techniques for assessing and forecasting the potential impact of alternative transport schemes and key policy areas of gender issues, rural transport and aspects of the transport planning process are also discussed.

Outline Of Syllabus

Evolution of Transport Policy in the UK and Europe, Economics of Travel Choice Behaviour. Behavioural Responses to Travel Demand Management Techniques. Data Collection Techniques. Forecasting Responses Using Revealed and Stated Preference. Local Transport Planning and Land-Use. Rural transport issues, social enterprise and equality issues.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The specialist skills, knowledge and understanding imparted during this module are assessed by means of an unseen written exam and a single item of individual coursework (critically reviewing government policy documentation on travel demand management techniques via a SWOT analysis). The examination paper employs a range of approaches in order to accurately assess student abilities. These may include essay, calculation and multi-part questions.
