Aims

Application of theory related to transport modelling as well as hands on experience of software packages play a major role when it comes to decision-making in transport planning and policy evaluation.

The aim of this module is to introduce a selection of current and potential future approaches for applying transport models to the real world, based on the theories and processes covered in CEG8419 module and providing hands on in depth experience of popular software packages.

By the end of the module it is intended that students will have developed fundamental understanding of the relationship between transport modelling and theory and their use in practice. The students should also have gained hand-on experience of using well established software packages, for example VISSIM and VISUM, which are commonly used to support decisions in the transport practice. The knowledge gained and skills developed will be directly related to the employment in the transport modelling, engineering and planning contexts. More importantly, the students will have a privilege to improve their skills and knowledge by analysing real world data and being involved in the sessions that deliver by transport practitioners.

They should be able to gain first-hand training of using well established software packages (eg VISSIM, VISUM, and AIMSUN) which are commonly used to support decisions in transport sector. The skills learned will be directly relevant to securing employment in the transport field.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Introductory lectures and computer practical's for VISSIM and VISUM will allow the student to gain fundamental understanding on how to export datasets to the software platform and carry out simulation modelling.

Lectures will cover the concepts of pedestrian modelling and simulation and the concepts of AIMSUN software. They will also guide the students to carry out online tutorials.

The coursework tests students' knowledge and understanding of underlying issues in the module through written communication. It is particularly designed for improving students' ability to understand journal articles and problem solving techniques in transport modelling and improving written communication skills. Also, it provides an opportunity to discuss the issues addressed in the articles with the team members and present their findings to the rest of the class to develop oral communication skills
