Aims

This module provides an opportunity for the student to develop their knowledge of clinical assessment techniques and gain a greater understanding of related diagnostic modalities, for example clinical imaging and pathology. Applications across a range of clinical settings, including critical care, will be explored and the trainee will gain insight into the interpretation and clinical decision making in the context of differential diagnosis.

Outline Of Syllabus

Common pathologies as relevant to the specialism, including anatomy and physiology
Physiological measurements and vital signs
Diagnostic tests, include imaging and pathology
Clinical pharmacology and therapeutics as relevant to the specialism, with special reference to patient safety
Evidence-based practice
Health inequalities
Sociology and psychology of health and illness
Innovation in healthcare
Genomics, bioinformatics and personalised healthcare
Epidemiology of common conditions related to the specialism
Screening principles in healthcare
Role of single-discipline and multi-professional teams in the care and management of patients, and in the delivery of services
Effective inter-professional team working

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On completion of the module the students should be able to:

1. Apply integrative knowledge and clinical and scientific judgement to inform decision making with regard to assessment, investigation and transdisciplinary patient-centred care in pathologies and conditions in their specialism.

2. Contextualise health, illness, and disability relevant to your specialism from a socio-psychological perspective.

3. Reflect upon the integration of genomics, bioinformatics, and personalised healthcare relevant to their specialism to drive innovation and transformation in service delivery.

4. Critically evaluate the evidence for public health provision in the wider context of the NHS and its wide range of different organisations.

5. Reflect on the evidence for trans-disciplinary working in their specialism.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module provides trainees with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the role of other related diagnostic modalities, for example, radiology and pathology in a number of different clinical settings.

Lecture sessions are used to establish a learning framework for the development of understanding, to explain complex concepts and to provide early insights into the relationships between theory and clinical / laboratory practice.

Small group teaching sessions are used to provide opportunities for interaction, discussion and clarification to support learning in selected areas.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The 1000 word written exercise will focus on the student’s workplace based experience of a patient pathway, incorporating both imaging and pathological investigations. Through this report students will demonstrate their understanding of alternative diagnostic modalities, out with their area of specialism that are used in the treatment of patients.

The student undertakes an oral presentation to demonstrate their attainment of the module knowledge outcomes, assessing their ability to demonstrate this attainment clearly, concisely and with the use of correct terminology.
