Aims

To enhance the abilities of the student to apply material from formal lecture courses to the design or operation of a real engineering device or system.

Outline Of Syllabus

A design study, associated with a chosen lecture course, involving the attainment of a device or system specification. Design options must be carefully weighted and the reasons for choosing particular options presented in a final written report. An academic staff supervisor is available for consultation.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

The knowledge outcomes from this module will include a reinforcement of the conceptual and factual knowledge associated with a given module by undertaking a practical project which will exercise the procedural knowledge associated with the module.

Intended Skill Outcomes

The ECAD module will enhance:
1. Subject-specific skills - in particular design skills.
2. Cognitive skills - analysing results.
3. Core skills - planning/ organising and problem solving.
4. Computer literacy - use of CAD packages.
5. Communication skills - report writing.

This module requires the student to address a problem which enhances their theoretical understanding of a given module by undertaking a piece of work in which he/she is wholly responsible but with the support of an academic supervisor.

Formative Assessments

Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.

Report1M2 – 3 page progress report to check student design work.
Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The short progress report is formatively assessed and provides the student and supervisor an opportunity to review project progress and discuss any issues at an early stage. Feedback from this report will inform the final summative report.



The final summative report will assess the students’ ability to describe their work, present and discuss results, and draw conclusions.
