Module content and learning objectives are intended to introduce core skills and methods required in INU1114 and INU1115 and across the full programme generally.

Aims

The module aims to enable international students to process, transform and communicate information.

The module comprises:

•       Information modes and communication methods appropriate to circumstances
•       Manual communication techniques
•       Principles for written and graphic media
•       Introduction to digital communication techniques

The module focuses on practical professional skills such as measuring, surveying, documenting and drawing as well as on communication and presentation skills, both manual and digital, complemented by an introduction to analytical skills, critical thinking and self-evaluation, with an emphasis on the importance of precedent studies in support of the design modules.

Outline Of Syllabus

•       Critical thinking, both individual and group work, information processing, analysis and evaluation
•       Analytical observation, measured surveying and recording, technical drawing, principles of sketching and photography, site and location analysis
•       Graphical and visual documentation and presentation
•       Report and portfolio compilation
•       Introduction to industry standard digital media techniques

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures provide theoretical contents and the weekly introduction to formative and summative tasks. Interactive seminar style small group teaching provides students with an opportunity to practice and to engage with contents. Lectures and seminars are interactive with opportunities for discussions and task guidance. Independent study provides students with an opportunity to research, to prepare for formative and summative tasks and extended self-guided study.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The coursework assignment focuses on developing observational, analytical and surveying skills as required by a general built environment education, and complemented by subject-specific skills in model-making, photographic composition, precedents and site analysis. This is complemented by the development of recording, analysis and synthesis of data for inclusion in graphical documentation, scaled technical drawings and presentations, accompanied by evidence of continuous recording, application and critical reflection upon the course of study throughout the semesters.

The portfolio assignment focuses on the effective combination and demonstration of various communication modes in architecture, the graphical communication of architectural contents by means of manual and IT-based drawing, modelling and photography, culminating in a comprehensive portfolio.
