Aims

This module builds on the knowledge and skills attained in Starting Out in Filmmaking (Level 4) and Advanced Exercises in Filmmaking (Level 5). This advanced practice-based module gives the students the opportunity to develop their cinematographic and editing skills by undertaking complex filmic exercises that will prepare them to undertake the practice-based film or media project. Different styles of filmmaking will be explored such as the experimental, poetic, essayistic, art, as well as hybrid documentaries. Cultivating a socially engaged and dynamic aesthetic vision, the emphasis will be on encouraging the students to develop a distinctive cinematographic and editing style. The aim is to nurture filmmakers who can also critically reflect on the form and content of both their own work and the work of others in the field. Students will also be taught web design and construction. The Internet has become a crucial means for independent documentary filmmakers to publicise their work, disseminate it and build support networks.

This modules aims to:
1. Critique a range of the technical, stylistic, aesthetic and representational dynamics in different genre of documentary filmmaking: film-essay, poetic, hybrid, experimental, autobiographical etc
2. Apply advanced principles of cinematography and editing, using a range of footage (captured and archival) and synchronous and asynchronous sound, to produce a self –contained piece of cinematic art.
3. Equip students with the skills to design and construct a website for a film project.

- Alternative practices: experimental, poetic, essayistic, hybrid etc
- Advanced principles and practices of cinematography and editing.
- Critical Theory and critical and creative reflective practice
- Principles and practices of web design and construction for film web design and construction.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures that set out key theories and concepts and workshops based on working through the implication of key readings for practice (LO 1-2). Practice based sessions on web design and construction will enable students to achieve LO 3.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The rationale for the assessments is to enable the students to demonstrate their intellectual grasp of experimental documentary and aesthetics and to illustrate this through the production of a short film. Given the emphasis on practice, the production of the film forms the major part of the assessment, while the web design and construction provides the students an opportunity to present their journey on the film project to an wider audience. This presents an opportunity for the student to articulate the theoretical and methodical considerations that informed their practice to a non-specialist audience.
